Clean Water for All God’s Children
Objective:
To make a usable paper ‘cup’; designed to reinforce the story of Jesus and the Samaritan
woman (when Jesus asked for a drink, the Samaritan woman reminded him that he had
nothing to hold the water!)
Materials Needed:
one ‘Good News Paper Cup’ activity sheet (below) per student.
Teacher Instructions:
(it is helpful for the teacher to cut off the excess paper at the bottom of this activity sheet
before giving it to the student.) Note: it is especially effective if the story is read as the
cup is made; story is included here.
have the whole class do this activity together, helping each other to follow these oral
instructions:
1.
fold the square paper at the dotted line, so that the faces are touching each
other; you now have a triangle.
2.
fold one bottom corner of the triangle over to touch the middle of the
opposite side:
3.
repeat with the other bottom corner; the paper should now look like this:
4.
fold down the free triangles at the top of the ‘cup’ – one to the front and one
to the back – to expose the two faces.
5.
pop open the paper ‘cup’. It can actually hold water! (for a short time!)
6.
Now, teacher pour clean water from a clear pitcher into each child’s cup,
reminding them of our good fortune to have
this
clean water as well as the
living water
of Jesus Christ. All drink together.
Note:
If time permits, it is very effective to help the children understand the difficulty of hauling
water by engaging in the mission activity described on Day 5 of the pre-school section.
