Clean Water for All God’s Children
Objective:
to give students an opportunity to create ‘germs’ that are visible reminders
of the
invisible organisms that live in dirty water and make us sick.
Materials:
cans of Play-doh in various colors (or homemade play-doh); a sample ‘germ’ that you
have made is helpful; pictures of some of the organisms that live in dirty water (e.g.,
Giardia; Cryptosporidium) available from the internet
Teacher Instructions:
explain to students that germs are invisible (visible only through a microscope).
Ask students to create a vicious-looking ‘germ’ out of Play-doh, which they may then
keep in a place that will remind them about what they have learned about using clean
water and washing their hands.
Homemade Play-doh:
2 cups flour
Mix all ingredients in a cold skillet.
1 cup salt
Heat to 350°, stirring constantly until
3 Tsp. cream of tartar mixture thickens and forms dough.
2 Tbs. vegetable oil
Knead while warm. Store in air-tight
2 cups water
container.

Day 3: Crafts
Play-doh Germs
In order to get the children to leave their ‘germs’ to dry for a day, you might
enact the story of Namaan, going into the water, and the ‘germs’ leaving his
body, remaining in the ‘river’.
Idea!
