Clean Water for All God’s Children
Today’s focus: water meets our physical as well as our spiritual needs
Props: 3 one-gallon water bottles
Welcome and Singing
Leader:
Welcome, Mr. Clean Water. Hello, Billy Bramble. I’m glad to see you
this morning. They dialogue:
Mr. W:
Good morning, Billy.
BB:
Good morning, Mr. Water. You know, that’s a funny name, “Mr.
Water.” Do you have a first name?
Mr. W:
Sure I do. My first name is Clean. Clean Water is my name.
BB:
I should have guessed that! We’ve been talking about clean water all
week in Bible School.
Mr. W:
Billy, did you know that every single day 13,000 people die because they
drink water that’s not clean. And most of those people are children!
BB:
That’s terrible! That’s really sad! Why do they drink that bad water?
Mr. W:
Well, mostly they drink bad water because it’s all they have to drink.
Billy, have you ever been thirsty?
BB:
Sure. Last year on a Scout hike I forgot my canteen. I didn’t have water
for over two hours – boy, was I thirsty!
Mr. W:
Did you know that Jesus got thirsty sometimes, just like you do?
BB:
Really? Even Jesus? I want to hear that story, don’t you, boys and girls?
Leader:
Here’s a question for you: if you had only 3 gallons of water to use for a
whole day (hold up 3-gallon jug), how would you use that water? To
drink? to cook? to brush your teeth? to wash the dog? You’d have to
make some choices, wouldn’t you? And if you made poor choices, you
could run out, and then you’d be pretty thirsty, just like Billy Bramble on
his Boy Scout hike! Well, we have lots more water than 3 gallons each
day, but we should still be making choices about how we use water. For
example: suppose you and your brother are washing the family car. You
hose it down, then you leave the hose running while you soap and scrub
the car. Is that a good choice? Here’s another one: your neighbor
changes the oil in his car, and you see him start to pour the used oil down
the drain in the street. Do you remind him that oil and chemicals
contaminate our water supply? Sometimes the choices we make are not
easy, but they will actually help us and other people. God made
everything good, remember, and God is counting on
us
to take care of it!
If we can do a better job of that, then maybe so many children won’t be
sick in the world from dirty water.
Our story today is about a time when Jesus was thirsty, and he asked for
water. Let’s say our verse together now: “.....those who drink of the
(living) water/ that I will give them/ will never be thirsty.” John 4:14
