In February, Tom Ritter led
a water team fromTrinity Pres-
byterian Church in Starkville,
Miss., and Leland (Miss.) Pres-
byterian Church to El Salva-
dor.
The group also included Paul
Thompson, Heidi Clausen, Lee
Stovall, and Daniel Lopez, the
former LWW coordinator. Kris-
ti VanNostran, Joining Hands
against Hunger Presbyterian
missionary, also worked with
the team.
Despite some difficulties —
including four flat tires! —the
group visited 10 of the country’s
12 LWW sites and convened an
operators’ conference.
The group found that two
of the water systems are facing
difficulties, one not operating
due to competition and lack of
community support and the
other experiencing serious is-
sues related to its water source.
The others are generally do-
ing well. The Santa Cruz site is
a model system, run by a local
health promoter and offering
an organized delivery system,
providing clean water to 80 lo-
cal families.
Although the operators’ con-
ference was smaller than hoped
for, it went very well. The par-
ticipants had a chance to meet
and get to know one another, as
well as to discuss technical and
legal issues.
In addition, the LWW team
also met with several organiza-
tions to network and explore
future installation sites, and es-
tablished an LWW “bodega,” or
storage space, in San Salvador.

In January, Kathy and Jerry
Vaughan and Pierce Buford — veter-
an travelers for Living Waters for the
World — once again loaded the LWW
exhibit into the Vaughans’ truck.
This time they were headed to
Grand Rapids, Mich., to attend the As-
sociation of Presbyterian Church Edu-
cators Conference. Once there, Jenny
Thagard, a Christian Educator from
Tuscaloosa, Ala., also assisted in man-
ning the booth. This is the sixth APCE
conference attended by LWW.
This year the exhibit focused on
the Vacation Bible School curriculum.
APCE participants could look over the
actual curriculum and see the crafts
that children would make as they at-
tend a Living Waters for the World
VBS.
How exciting to hear educators
praise the curriculum, and to have
them encourage those who had not
used it to do so.
In addition, three copies of the VBS
Clean Water Training curriculum were
given away to thrilled APCE partici-
pants.
Also on display were LWW bro-
chures, a Water Crises flyer, pictures
of installations and persons at various
locations, flags of each country with
number of installations, LWW items
for sale, LWW information sheets that
could be used by churches, informa-
tion on Clean Water U and the dates,
Living Waters for the World Teen and
Youth Awareness flyer, and the Wa-
termarks devotional book. The LWW
DVD played throughout the day.
As always Mary Weber’s crocheted
necklaces were a big hit….donations
received were almost enough to pay
expenses to the conference.
Amodel of an actual systemwas also
on display at the booth as the LWW in-
formational DVD played throughout
the day.
