The
Opening Assembly
is designed to introduce children to the water theme and the Bible
story that will be the focal point for the rest of the day. This time can, of course, be tailored to
fit your situation, but should include a daily welcome to the children, some singing, and the
dialoge included in each day’s instructions. As it appears here, it requires a leader and two
‘characters’: Mr. Clean Water (a man with a large cardboard water drop surrounding his face)
and Billy Bramble (a young man or boy, slightly disheveled and slightly dirty). These
characters could, of course, be Ms. Clean Water and Betty Bramble, but it’s nice to have some
male participation! The Bible verse of the day (see ‘Daily Content and Emphasis’ in the
introductory section) should be displayed prominently in the front of the room, along with
water bottles containing clean and dirty water, and the water bottle used for the collection (see
‘For the Director’ for a description of these). A map of the world and flags of other nations
also make the room interesting and colorful. Other props – use your imagination!
The
Closing Assembly
is designed to place emphasis on mission in countries where people
must drink contaminated water. The leader may wear a Mexican sombrero or costume from
another country while he/she tells of the problem of impure water there, and what can be done
about it, encouraging the children to bring offerings to help. Each day, a large poster of a
person somewhere in the developing world who needs clean water will be used (included).
The goal of this time is for the children to understand the importance of getting clean water to
all of God’s children everywhere. Day by day, these posters can be hung in the assembly
room.
