Idea!
You may want to consider cutting
holes in garbage bags for heads and
arms, creating a ‘raincoat’ for each
child! (Use caution, however, with
children and any plastic bags!)
Clean Water for All God’s Children
General Instructions: Recreation/Snacks Leaders
Rev. 1/06
Your tasks as recreation/snack leaders are:
To give children a time for active play, while reinforcing the ‘water’ focus of the day
To provide a nutritious snack
Recreation leader:
Included here are some suggestions for activities that reinforce the daily themes. Children
love to play with water, so you’ll have no trouble engaging them! However, you may want
to consider having only one or two ‘wet days’ on which children will get soaked, and let
parents and teachers know ahead of time, so that they can wear/bring suitable clothes. Use
your imagination – these are only suggestions!
Be sure to have all your materials ready, and enough for all the groups. Remember that
you’ll have only a few minutes between groups to ‘reset.’
A note of caution: be very careful about ‘touching’. For example, when the children are
asked to carry a water balloon between them without using hands, make a ‘safe’ suggestion,
like between elbows. Also, remember that some children may not want to get wet, or may
not want to participate at all. These games should be optional – be creative in ways to
include any ‘observer’ children.
Snack leader:
You may want to consider offering
nothing to drink
on the 2
nd
day – a reminder to the
children that there are many children who have no good water to drink! (Be sure to discuss
this with your VBS team!) Take the opportunity to reinforce handwashing by asking
children to wash hands before eating their snacks.
