Day 3:
The Healing of Naaman (II Kings 5)
The main idea of this day is that water makes things clean and keeps things clean.
Bible Story:
Use the Bible Story as contained in the material for ‘Bible Story: Day 3’; you may want to adjust
the story a bit to suit their attention span . Again, be dramatic! After discussion of the story,
have a prayer of thanksgiving for clean things.
Mission:
The focus for this day is the cleansing power of water (and soap), that cleanliness is as important
as clean water in keeping our bodies healthy. You may want to put little white ‘leprosy’ sticker
dots on the children, then have others save their ‘water wands’ from day 2 while the ‘leper
children’ take seven ‘dips’ into their midst, then remove their dots. They will also enjoy the
‘Germs Hate Soap’ activity – a good time to talk about germs that are so tiny we can’t see them,
but they get on our hands, and then into our mouths, and make us
sick
!. This is also a good time
for a handwashing demonstration, during which the children use imaginary (or real!) soap and
water, and scrub as you demonstrate while they sing ‘Jesus Loves Me’ (see the handwashing
instructions on the coloring pages of ‘Day 3 Mission’).
Crafts:
Today is ‘play-dough’ day! Encourage the children to make something that looks like a germ.
As the children work, talk with them about germs, about how it feels to be sick, about how it
would be to have to drink water that has germs in it; about not having enough water to stay clean
and healthy. Put the germs in a small paper bowl with the child’s name on it, for drying and
taking home.
Recreation/Snack:
The ‘Germ Tag’ described in ‘Recreation Day 3’ is appropriate for young children. You may
also want to have some bubble wands and soapy water in the free play area today.
