Clean Water for All God’s Children
Today’s focus: conserving water
Props needed: 6 one-gallon water jugs; a large globe or colorful world map
Welcome and Singing
Leader:
Oh, here comes Mr. Clean Water again, with his friend Billy Bramble. They
dialogue:
Mr. W:
Good morning, Billy.
BB:
Good morning, Mr. Water.
Mr. W:
Billy, how much water do you think it took to brush your teeth this morning?
Here’s a gallon jug. Show me how much you think it took.
BB:
(putting finger about 2 inches from the bottom) About this much.
Mr. W:
Really? Tell me how you brush your teeth, Billy.
BB:
Well, I turn on the water first. (goes through the motions as he speaks) Then
I wet the brush, then I put the toothpaste on the brush, then I brush
real good
for about 2 minutes, just like my Mom says, then I rinse the brush, and then I
turn off the water.
Mr. W:
Well, Billy, if that’s the way you do it, you use lots more water than just this
much (finger on same spot). In fact, you use about SIX of these jugs of water!
(brings out 5 more jugs)
BB:
You’re kidding!
Mr. W:
I’m not kidding, Billy. If you leave the water running the whole time you
brush your teeth, you use about six gallons of water. Boys and girls, let’s help
Billy count to six gallons – use your fingers and count with me. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6!
Six gallons of clean water. But if you just turn the water off while you do the
brushing part, then guess how much water you’d use.
BB:
Maybe
then
I’d use this much (points to same spot).
Mr. W:
Right! Now isn’t it too bad to waste all of this water (point to the other five
jugs) when we only need this much?
BB:
Yeah, you’re right, Mr. Water. I’ll do better tomorrow.
Mr. W:
Good. Boys and girls, you can help save water, too, if you do just like Billy’s
going to do, and turn off the water while you brush. OK? Now, Billy,
yesterday we learned that God created water to be good, but did you know
that God has also used water to save people?
BB:
How could God do that?
Mr. W:
That
is what our Bible story is about today. You’ll see!
Leader:
(Have a globe or map to show that we live on a ‘blue planet’ – lots of water!)
Look at this map (globe) – look how much of it is blue. All the blue places on
this map are water – oceans, and rivers, and lakes. The oceans are most of the
blue space, but that water isn’t good to drink – why not? (salty) And all of
this part at the top and the bottom is frozen. That means that only a little bit
of the water in the whole world is fresh water that we can drink. Sounds like
