Idea!
For young children, you may
want to pre-make the wells in
a stiff white paper, then let
them color the water and
color flowers on the outside.
Clean Water for All God’s Children
Objective:
to create a construction paper ‘well’ to reinforce the story of Jesus and the Samaritan
woman.
Materials Needed:
construction paper: dark brown stiff paper (one each student); gray and light brown (one
for each three or four students); light blue (one for each three or four students); yarn or
string (6” per student); pre-cut construction paper water jugs (one per student); glue
sticks (one for each one or two students); scissors (one for each student); scotch tape.
Teacher Instructions:
(Some of the steps of this activity may need to be done in advance by the instructors,
depending upon the age and dexterity of the students. For example, make copies of the
attached sheet on stiff paper, and cut off rounded edge; wells are then ready to fold. You
may also want to pre-cut the water and/or the stones.)
This activity is best done step by step, with everyone completing each step before moving
on to the next step.
1. Using the attached pattern as your guide, and a piece of stiff paper, cut off the
rounded area at the top of the well.
2. Fold sides in to meet in the front center.
3. Instruct students to cut ‘water’ from light blue paper, and glue along the bottom inside
of the well.
4. Instruct students to cut or tear ‘stones’ from gray and light brown paper, and glue them
to the bottom outside of the well.
5. Cut out a ‘jug’ and attach to one end of the 6” string. (Students may want to write
their names on the jugs.)
6. Tape the other end of the string to the top
outside
of the well, extending the jug end
over to the
inside
of the well, just below the water line.
7. Show students how to ‘draw’ water by pulling on the string from the top outside of the
well.
Note: to save some time, you may want to cut out
the water jugs, water, and rocks in advance. You
may also use a hole punch to make a hole for the
handle of the jug. This allows more time for
students to be creative with their wells.
