Clean Water for All God’s Children
Objective:
to create props that will be used in the telling of the story of the crossing of the Red Sea:
‘water wands’ that will be used to simulate water, and ‘spears’ that will be carried by the
Egyptian soldiers.
Materials:
for water wands: 3/8” X 18” dowel rods OR cardboard tubes from coathangers, or long
plastic drinking straws (best for very young children), one per student; crepe paper
streamers in several colors: dark blue, light blue, white; scotch tape (one/student). For
spears: dowel rods or cardboard tubes; gray construction paper ‘spearheads’.
Teacher Instructions:
for water wands: cut strips of crepe paper in varying lengths (12” – 24”); give 5 or 6 of
varying colors to each student.
Instruct students to tape ends of streamers (6 or 8 per student, varying colors) to one tip
of the dowel rod. When waved gently in the air, the wands simulate moving water.
For spears: cut spear heads from grey construction paper; instruct students to tape them
to the end of the rod to form ‘spears’.
Assign parts for the drama: one student is Moses, one is Pharaoh, several are Egyptians,
several are Hebrews, and at least two are the water of the Red Sea. Egyptians and
Pharaoh hold the spears; ‘water’ hold the water wands, waving them gently. Position the
‘water’ at one end of the room, ready to ‘part’ to let the Hebrews pass, but close in on the
Egyptians. Moses and the Hebrews in the middle of the room, Pharaoh and the Egyptians
on the other side of the room. Now, as you read the story (see Day 2 Bible Story), move
the students through the drama.

Day 2: Crafts
Water Wands and Spears
Idea!
For very young children,
teachers can make ‘hand
wavers’ – disposable plastic
gloves with crepe paper taped
to each finger; children can
draw a face on the palm, then
wear the gloves for the
‘drama’. Also, story can be
shortened.
