World Water Day, celebrated each March 22 since
1993, aims to bring sharp focus to the hard reality that
today, one person out of eight world-wide does not
have access to clean water! This reality, combined
with the massive lack of adequate sanitation, results in
tens of thousands of people – mostly children – dying
each day.
Also beginning in 1993, the Synod of Living Waters,
Presbyterian Church (USA), approved this wild idea,
presented by their Hunger Action Enablers (HAEs), of
community-sized clean water systems that could do
something about this massive crisis.
In September of that year, LWW was authorized to
fnd a Presbyterian partner along the U.S./Mexican
border and establish a pilot project for such an en-
deavor.
Our frst-ever clean water system (we now have
434) was installed in April 1996, working with Puentes
de Cristo in Hidalgo, Texas/Reynosa, Mexico, part of
the Presbyterian Border Ministries family. Here we
learned from Maria Medina, RN, Puentes de Cristo’s
medical director, “Clean water is medicine.”
then at each of our fve Clean Water U sessions. There,
combined with a simple supper, we lift up the good
news that progress IS being made in the world as more
people are gaining clean water!
So dear water saints, we who have been so abundant-
ly blessed and because still not everyone has clean wa-
ter, let us dare declare each day as a World Water Day,
following the risen One until the day comes when all
who seek clean water will have it.

executive director of Living Waters for the World.
World celebrates miracle of clean water
By BILL REED
As Living Waters for the World teams travel the world
working to bring clean water to communities in the name of
Christ, many are using blogs to communicate with those who
remain at home.
They come on a number of platforms:  Church website,
WordPress.com, blogspot.com.  These frequently involve dai-
ly summaries of the team’s activities, often with pictures.  It
is a great way to stay connected with those back home and to
help maintain their support for future work.
 Here are some good examples:
   (Herndon UMC, Va. - Haiti)
  (Fox Valley PC, Ill. -
Guatemala)
   (Eliza-
bethtown PC, Ky. - Guatemala)
  (Ashley Broad-
hurst, Las Vegas, Nev.)
  (Westminster
PC, Tenn. - Peru)
(Advent PC, Tenn. - the Phil-
ippines)
  (Memorial UMC, Eliza-
bethtown, Ky. – Haiti)
